PowerBlock Pro 100 EXP Adjustable Dumbbells Review

PowerBlock Pro 100 EXP adjustable dumbbells full set

This product was in-house tested by Michael at The Jungle Gym Reviews.

PowerBlock has been refining their adjustable dumbbell design for nearly 30 years, and I think the Pro 100 EXP might be the best version they’ve ever made if your priority is durability, fast weight changes, and long-term home gym versatility.

The Pro 100 EXP uses PowerBlock’s signature cage-style design and expandable system, allowing you to go from 5 to 100 pounds in 2.5-lb increments. You get urethane-coated plates (quieter and more durable than steel), a magnetic selector pin for quick changes, a thick knurled handle, and access to an accessory ecosystem that lets you convert these into kettlebells or even a barbell.

Where to Buy / Check Price

PowerBlock sells the Pro 100 EXP as a modular system, so you can start lighter and expand over time.

Expandable, Long-Term Design

One of the biggest strengths of the Pro 100 EXP is that you don’t have to buy 100-lb dumbbells upfront. You can:

  • Start with the 40-lb set

  • Add 20-lb expansion kits over time

  • Eventually reach the full 100-lb capacity

That makes these very friendly for progressive strength gains without a massive upfront cost.

Urethane-Coated Plates

This is a big upgrade over PowerBlock’s steel Elite series. The urethane:

Dramatically reduces noise

  • Protects floors and plates

  • Feels more “premium” when setting them down

If you train early, late, or in a shared space, this matters more than people realize.

Fast Weight Changes

The magnetic selector pin system is still one of the fastest ways to change weight:

  • Slide pin in

  • Lift dumbbell

  • Train

No spinning collars, no plates to thread on and off. If you do supersets, drop sets, or time-efficient workouts, this is a major win.

Knurled Handle

The 38 mm knurled handle is thick compared to most dumbbells, but it feels intentional:

  • Medium knurling

  • Very secure grip

  • Great for rows, presses, and heavy pulls

If you like thicker handles, this is a plus. If you prefer smaller traditional dumbbells, it may feel oversized.

My Real-World Experience

I’ve spent enough time with different adjustable dumbbells to say this confidently: PowerBlocks don’t feel like normal dumbbells—and that’s either a dealbreaker or totally fine depending on you.

The biggest thing you notice is weight distribution. Because the 2.5-lb adder weights sit in the handle and the plates lock in from the outside, the dumbbell naturally wants to rotate toward its heaviest point. You feel that most during:

  • Curls

  • Flyes

  • Any movement with a lot of wrist rotation

That said, I do appreciate the ability to make 2.5-lb jumps. Without that, I’d like these much less. Smaller jumps help offset some of the awkwardness by letting you progress more gradually.

The cage design doesn’t bother me at all. I don’t hit my wrists, and there’s plenty of clearance. That said, some PowerBlock models with extra upper crossbars can interfere with certain grips—this version avoids most of those issues.

For presses, rows, goblet squats, RDLs, and general strength training, these feel solid and predictable. For highly dynamic or “flowy” movements, you’ll be more aware that these aren’t traditional round dumbbells.

Weight Distribution

This is the big one. The dumbbells are inherently a bit lopsided depending on how they’re loaded. That’s just the nature of the design.

Doesn’t Feel Like a Traditional Dumbbell

If your top priority is:

  • Natural rotation

  • Even centrifugal force

  • Traditional round dumbbell feel

…there are better options.

Comparisons to Other Adjustable Dumbbells

Think of adjustable dumbbells as a “pick three” situation: Price – Durability – Speed of Change – Natural Feel

With the Pro 100 EXP, you get:

  • ✅ Durability

  • ✅ Speed of change

  • ✅ Reasonable price for a 100-lb system

  • ❌ Traditional dumbbell feel

Other options:

  • Ironmaster: Feels like real dumbbells, extremely durable, slower changes

  • REP Pepin Fast Series: Fast changes, more traditional feel, higher cost

  • Bolt Fitness Revolver: Fast changes and normal feel, durability is more questionable

None are “wrong”—it’s all about priorities.

Verdict

The PowerBlock Pro 100 EXP is one of the best long-term, no-nonsense adjustable dumbbell systems you can buy for a home gym. If you value:

  • Fast adjustments

  • Durability

  • Expandability

  • A proven design with decades of refinement

…this is an excellent choice.

If you care more about traditional dumbbell feel and perfectly even weight distribution, you may want to look elsewhere. But if efficiency, space savings, and reliability matter most, the Pro 100 EXP earns its reputation.
